Wine & Cheese Wednesday: Competitor Cabernet

This week I am bringing an amazing wine and cheese combination that is perfect for a cozy fall day!  Competitor wine is a bold cabernet from the Lodi region of California. This is my first time trying wine from this region and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.  Today I paired it with an epic cheese plate with some special cheeses from Italy.  The first cheese on the left is called Crucolo.  It is from the Italian Alps and has a nutty, creamy flavor and a soft texture.  The cheese on the right is called Fantasy.  It is an imported Sicilian cheese made from sheep's milk with red chili, rocket, wild arugula and green olives infused.  This cheese really packs a punch!  To accompany the cheese, I added a pear ginger and fig preserve that paired perfectly with the Crucolo. The mini bruschetta toasts and Tarallini (Italian crackers) complete the plate.

What The Experts Say:

The Competitor is a Cabernet Sauvignon in a rustic style, with bold red fruit notes, subtle, earthy undertones, and silky tannins that provide texture without being overly grippy. On the dinner table, it teams up perfectly with red meat, tomato-based sauces, and roasted vegetables.

What I Say:

This cabernet has very strong fruit notes and is a bit on the sweeter side.  I usually prefer a bolder cabernet, but the sweetness of this wine was not so overpowering so I still liked the taste.  If you prefer a sweeter cabernet, then this wine would definitely be for you!  It paired well with the cheeses and would be a great compliment to a hearty fall meal.  I am interested in trying more wines from this region to compare and contrast.   For the price, I think this wine is perfect for a cabernet lover who prefers things on the sweeter side.
